Bitchin’ 1970s Photos From New England Dragway – Willie Borsch, Muldowney, More!

(Photos by Bob Boudreau) – These photos were taken at the big AHRA meets the track hosted during that era and as you’ve seen and will continue to see, they drew the biggest names the sport had to offer at that time. Take note at how many of these cars are slathered in corporate badging….spoiler alert NONE OF THEM ARE.

This is the age that endeared the sport to so many people because of the personal connections they felt for the competitors and the cars they were racing. Those are the two key elements that have completely vanished from the big time scene today. Those connections live in the world of small tire doorslammer racing, nostalgia racing, and other venues, but at the top of the mountain, things are not the same.

In this gallery you’ll see Wild Willie Borsch, Shirley Muldowney driving the twin engine top gas dragster she piloted for a while, a ton of sublimely awesome sportsman cars, and funny cars like Dale Creasy’s Tyrant and Lew Arrington’s Brutus. One thing to note about Willie’s car (ok two). First is the fake arm that hung out the window (which was sold on eBay a while back) and the second is the fact that he ran a big block Chevy in the Chrysler bodied car. That funny car was pretty much his Waterloo. As cool as it was, the thing just didn’t perform and we’ll always remember him for his iconic antics in the Winged Express.

LIKE THE EARLIER GALLERY, THIS ONE IS TOTALLY AWESOME! HIT THE LINK BELOW TO SEE THE PHOTOS!
