1960s and 70s Vintage Drag Racing Action – Incredible Film! Little Red Wagon Wreck, All Kinds of Cars, Just Awesome

Few videos featuring vintage drag racing action from the 1960s and 1970s can come within a country mile of being close to how bad ass this one is. A friend tipped us off to the recently motorcycleuploaded video and how it came to be. It mixes footage from many different races, a pretty good spread of years, and many different classes to keep your eyes glued to the screen. There are wheel standers, pro stocks, funny cars, and dragsters by the dozen.

One of the most amazing parts of the movie happens around 6:00 in when we see the Little Red Wagon taking on the Fugitive of Randy Curtis. The truck is out in front and then things go very wrong for Bill “Maverick” Golden. The truck veers off course and into the dirt and then goes into a series of barrel rolls. We lost count but the truck goes ass over tea kettle a whole bunch of times. Nasty stuff!

All the stars are present, there’s some fun footage of Garlits cruising in a Mopar for what looks to be a television commercial, and the racing is perfect. We also dug the interlude featuring the studyperry3 motorcycle jumpers practicing on a crossing ramp with two guys crossing in the air. It may be tame by today’s standards but it sure isn’t easy to do!

Dawn Mazi-Hovsepian shared the video with us and along with the link came these words –

Here’s an incredible mashup of 16mm vintage drag racing footage uploaded by Steven Kruml on behalf of Dale Schafer. Schafer, who worked at Albuquerque Dragway in the 60s and 70s and ran fuel check at NHRA events, acquired the footage to be used in TV advertising, as well as home movie footage. It features Garlits, Prudhomme, Grumpy’s Toy, some home films including the two crashes at Albuquerque Dragway by the Little Red Wagon, some local film and a film of the Kenz and Leslies Cougar Funny Car. Check it out!
