2014 California Hot Rod Reunion: Awful, Awful Altereds – Fuel, Alky, and Gas Burners All Here

2014 California Hot Rod Reunion: Awful, Awful Altereds – Fuel, Alky, and Gas Burners All Here

Altereds are drag racing’s worst and most entertaining idea ever. No wheelbase, no weight, a horsepower to weight ratio that’s better than the space shuttle, and typically a blower sticking up in the driver’s face forcing them to basically use the force in a van attempt to control the uncontrollable. The 2014 California Hot Rod Reunion drew some of the coolest altereds in the world to Bakersfield and Famoso Raceway. From the top of the food chain nitro burners to naturally aspirated gas burners and alky burning examples for days, it was Bantam, Fiat, and Ford bodied perfection all weekend. There’s a couple of camps within the altered realm. The old school guys like them along the lines of the Bradford’s and Winged Express cars with chassis that maintain the short wheelbase of the 1960s. More modern cars tend to be stretched out some, especially the guys using retired funny car chassis to get them down the track. We’ve got no dog in that fight and a cool altered is a cool altered….just like an ugly one is an ugly one. You know ’em when you see ’em.

Here, you’ll find the best and coolest altereds that we saw at Bakersfield in no particular order, except for the fact that the Winged Express is first because it is always first, got it? They rarely go straight, they often thrill the crowd, and they’ll be cool until the end of time. Altereds, baby. Awful, Awful Altereds!

  1. Jay Bree

Wild Willie would approve (while hanging on to the cab with one hand).

Nothing defines the wretched excess of drag racing like a fuel altered.
