2015 Mustang To Have Factory Line Lock! Video And Release From Ford – This Is Cool!

2015 Mustang To Have Factory Line Lock! Video And Release From Ford – This Is Cool!

You just read that right. Ford has announced that a line-lock will be standard equipment on the 2015 Mustang GT no matter if you are a Ford/Chevy/Chrysler guy this is flipping cool news. The line-lock is not the typical style piece that you’d install on your old muscle car. There’s no button to hold on the dash or solenoid screwed to the fender. Instead, it uses the brake computer to lock the front brakes electronically while the rears are not applied so perfect drag strip burnouts can be done. This also means that massive street burnouts can be done as well. Now, this option does raise a few questions regarding warranty and other things that we’ll get to in a second but the fact that the legal department signed off on this thing is amazing to us in a good way. We have seen some really wonky aftermarket line lock installs on late model cars over the last few years at various tracks and we have also seen more than our fair share of guys cooking the back brakes off of their cars doing “brake stands” where the rear brakes are applied but the engine overpowers them to create the stationary burnout effect. This option cures all of that stuff. With a catch…

The catch of course, and Ford is being very much up front with this is that racing of any kind voids your warranty. What does that matter, you ask? Well, let’s say you decide to engage your line lock at the track, your dump the clutch at 8,000 RPM because your are a big dummy and the result of this action is that the rear end comes apart like there was a live grenade hiding in it. No bother, you’ll have it towed home and then towed to the dealer and just say it happened while you were driving and no one will be the wiser, right? Not so much. If the technician “plugs” the car in and sees that the line lock has been engaged once or more, will the assumption be that you were racing and all warranty bets are off? We don’t know yet but we’re guaranteeing you that it won’t be long after these cars hit the streets that a situation like this will arise and we’ll see how it plays out.

We love this option and we know that we’ll have our hands on a 2015 5.0L Mustang before the summer is out. When we do, it’ll hit the strip and the lock shall be tested…and tested good. We’ll leave the legal mumbo-jumbo to others, we ‘ll just be happy that there are still engineers out there doing cool stuff and making the bean counters chug Maalox at night when they go home. This video and the full release from Ford prove that this is a real deal situation and not some kind of hoax!

INNOVATIVE SOFTWARE GIVES RACERS INDUSTRY-EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE FEATURE FOR ALL-NEW 2015 FORD MUSTANG GT

  • Ford leverages advanced controls technology to give drag racers electronic line-lock – an industry-first performance feature standard on the all-new Ford Mustang GT
  • Electronic line-lock will give drag racers the benefit of a mechanical system without having to modify the brakes of 2015 Mustang GT
  • Electronic line-lock along with standard launch control should help bracket racers achieve more consistent performance at the drag strip

Ford engineers are leveraging state-of-the-art controls software technology to give some of the most avid Mustang customers an industry-first feature – electronic line-lock.

“Competition has been an integral part of the Ford Mustang lifestyle since its earliest days 50 years ago,” said Steve Ling, Ford car marketing manager. “We know our customers, and we wanted to provide a unique feature for those wishing to take full advantage of the increased capability offered by this new Mustang GT at the drag strip.”

Mustang has run everything from rally to stock car racing, but with drag racing a particularly popular venue for grassroots competitors, electronic line-lock on every 2015 Ford Mustang GT should be a real benefit for customers who like to compete one-quarter mile at a time.

“We’re using advanced controls technology for the all-new Mustang to provide some of our most dedicated fans with an industry-first feature they can use when they go to the track,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “With electronic line-lock, customers who drive their Mustangs to work all week and then compete on the weekends will appreciate not having to modify their brake systems to be able to do effective tire prep at the drag strip.”

The flexibility of track apps, launch control and selectable drive modes makes it easy for Mustang drivers to get the right capabilities for any situation.

As one of the most exciting and accessible forms of motorsport, drag racing – in particular, bracket racing – has always been a great fit for the powerful, rear-wheel-drive Mustang. Drag strips are often open during warm weather weekends for amateur competitors to bring out their factory stock or modified cars to run against the clock.

Consistency pays off in bracket racing, where competitors try to get as close as possible to their predicted quarter-mile times without going faster. Electronic line-lock and launch control – also standard on Mustang GT with manual transmission – can help drivers achieve more consistent performance from run to run.

With the electronic line-lock feature enabled, when a driver releases the brake pedal, the hydraulic control unit for the stability control system will keep the front brakes locked while releasing the rear brakes. When Mustang is sitting in the burnout box of a drag strip, the driver can apply the accelerator to spin up the rear wheels to warm the tires for maximum grip. This can all be done without having to balance one foot on the brake and the other on the gas, or install a mechanical line-lock.

With the tires properly warmed up, drivers can pull up to the staging line, engage launch control, and get a perfect catapult as soon as the lights go green.

“Whether a customer wants to take weekend road trips, go road racing or compete in grassroots drag racing, we aim to maximize the driving experience for everyone,” said Pericak. “Mustang offers selectable drive modes for those who prefer to compete on road courses or in autocross events, so when we realized we could provide a really cool feature like electronic line-lock that no one else offers, the decision was easy – ‘Let’s do it!’”

Electronic line-lock for 2015 Mustang GT is intended for use only on racetracks. Racing your vehicle will void your warranty.

Except for the last line in Ford’s release, I would think this was a story left over from 20 days ago.

Actually, it’s a pretty smart idea for reducing a buncha warranty claims.

‘Customer tries line lock function, a hymen or something in the trans is popped or reset, and voila! ‘Car musta been raced, warranty voided.

Gimme a break (or should it be a brake?).

So include feature. Use of feature voids warrantee. I hope they’re pretty upfront about that when the customer is signing the note.
