2017 NHRA Circle K Winternationals Action: Top Sportsman and Top Dragster

2017 NHRA Circle K Winternationals Action: Top Sportsman and Top Dragster

(Photos by Wes Allison) – Top Dragster and Top Sportsman racing were featuring at the NHRA Circle K Winternationals for the first time in 2017. These two classes became part of the NHRA divisional program several years ago and the popularity, quality, and demand from racers was so great that it is now a class featured at many national events and both categories feature their own national points chase sponsored by RacingRVs.com. At Pomona it was Ed Olpin from Utah taking the win in his Camaro on the Top Sportsman side of things and Mike Coughlin winning Top Dragster.

Olin actually doubled up, winning two classes at the event making him just the 21st man in NHRA history to do it and marking the 34th time that it has happened in competition on the national event level. Olpin has been a factor in the national points chase for Top Sportsman each of the last two years and he’s off to a great start in 2017.

Top Dragster winner Mike Coughlin was piloting one of the neatest machines the category. A brand new car featuring a Dan Page chassis and a ProCharger equipped, ProLine built 481x style engine with electronic fuel injection, it went quicker and faster all weekend with its last couple of round wins coming on dial-ins that were deep into the six second range. This car uncorked would likely run in the 5.70s or 5.80s. Power for days!

We think you’ll dig these cars, trucks, dragsters, and altereds from the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster ranks. They are fun classes to watch and they have to be fun classes to race!
