Drag Action Gallery: Burnouts and Cool Cars At US60 Drag Strip

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Burnt rubber.  Just a little.  With this being the last event of the year many were willing to pull out all the stops for one last go at it and I also asked them to give me something to take a photo of.  Nearly everyone gave it their all with good results.  A few, who will remain nameless, under achieved.  Still, tires were spun with at least some fury and many clouds of vaporized rubber enveloped the area.

Some of the Straight-axle Mafia guys went above and beyond in their sacrifices to Vulcan.  Wade Craig went all out on nearly every pass in his 455-powered Poncho.  We already mentioned Tom McCreary in the first article and his ’61 Falcon Wagon, the nugget, and their proclivity to making haze.  Bruce Sturdivant might have been the best burnout show all day.  He repeatedly wound it up right out of the box and kept the valves near float past the starting line.  We approve.  Jim Baker’s Krazy Horse Mustang was getting it pretty good as well.  Chuck Williams white Comet was putting on a good show until this last go-round an oil leak spewed on the headers making for even more smoke and some foul odors.  Nothing major, just a lot of clean up.  Herman Hill can always be counted on for a big smokey round after round in his patriotic-colored Henry J.  Bracket cars, bikes, and testing cars kept the tiny bits of tire flying as well.  A good time was had and memories made before the cars go silent over the long winter.

Enjoy.
