The Baytown Rumble: Elite Motorsports and Gray Motorsports Crews Brawl In Texas

The Baytown Rumble: Elite Motorsports and Gray Motorsports Crews Brawl In Texas

Well, it got weird in Houston. A long simmering feud between Alex Laughlin’s racing operation and Gray Motorsports boiled over and resulted in the Elite Motorsports and Gray Motorsports crews brawl video that you will see below. Laughlin ran Gray Motorsports power in his pro stock car during the 2016 season before making a change to Elite Motorsports power in 2017. The transition was rocky in the fact that Gray Motorsports claims that Laughlin made indications that he was retaining them for his engine program in 2017 and said as much when asked directly if they were planning on making a switch by Gray directly. Now that you know that we can set the scene for what happened during eliminations.

At the top end of the track Tanner Gray had some things to say to Alex Laughlin about his current choice engine suppliers and that resulted in the two of them getting into an animated conversation before being separated by their crews and rolling back to the pits.

Once back in the pit area Laughlin was with Elite Motorsports’ Richard Freeman and they happened to notice Tanner Gray (who was pitted across the lane) smiling at them in what they perceived to be a taunting fashion. After words were exchanged at a distance, things intensified rapidly and it turned into the mob scene you see below.

You’ll see some of the confrontation below and you will also see follow up interviews with both Tanner Gray and Richard Freeman post tussle. We can tell you that while the facade here is that they are going to “settle it on the race track” this thing is far, far from over. In fact, we had a conversation with one crew guy who was involved in the mess you’ll see below and he firmly believes that things are going to get worse before they get better.

The best thing is that these guys will be racing again in three days at the Four Wide Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina. That’s the Gray’s backyard. We love the fact that the two youngest guys in the class are after each other and this is not some trumped up junk. These guys really, honestly, truly dislike each other and we’re going to be interested to see how things go at the four wide race and the next weekend at Atlanta Dragway as the NHRA’s first back to back to back of the season plays on.

Have to believe the NHRA loves all of this. How else can they get fans to care about a boring, outdated class that should have been shelved years ago..

Kia Ora Bro. They know nothing about Respect. Leave it in NASCAR.

How would it go in F1? I bet FOM wouldn’t stand for it.

That’s why I prefer land racing. I never have to worry about the big elbow drop or camel clutch.

Another source said it was a staging incident that triggered things. Bottom bulb duel? Double bulb?
