Stock and Super Stock are two of the coolest classes in NHRA drag racing and as a guy who has literally called about half the races on the tour this year I can say that with some confidence. Classic muscle cars and weird combos are always entertaining but the infusion of the late model factory drag machines from Ford, Chrysler, and Chevrolet have changed things forever. These cars have advanced technology and people’s perception of it more than virtually any other development in sportsman racing. Guys who would never have found themselves with a lap top plugged into their cars are now fluent in the terminology and tech of electronic fuel injection. One of the families that has never been fearful of technology is the Calvert family, known for their line of chassis components that are designed to get cars hooking and gone off the starting line! John Calvert, the dad, is a championship level racer and has been for decades. His twin sons have followed in the old man’s footsteps and this video looks at the family and specifically their AAA/SA Cobra Jet which is powered by a 900-1000hp blown DOHC Ford engine and runs deep into the 8-second zone.

You’ll also see pal ‘o Bangshift Ricky Best in this video. Ricky works for Holley and is one of the best known EFI guys on the west coast. On any given day he can be found in engine shops, dyno cells, or at race tracks of varying sizes and shapes assisting racers and whoever else may need a hand getting themselves tuned up, doing troubleshooting, or aiding a racer to get that extra tenth he has been working for all season.

The Calverts recently switched from a different EFI system to the Holley setup and they discuss the differences between the two in both terms of performance and ease of use. There was a time wen stock eliminator was about pulling into the strip, airing down the tires, popping of the hub caps, and hammering the gas. Those days are long gone. This is as high tech as it gets and the never ending quest for just a little less elapsed time and a little more MPH will drive the evolution of both the Cobra Jet and the efi system feeding it. Guaranteed.
