DigNight 2016 at the NRG Stadium Parking Lot – Big Power, Little Traction

DigNight 2016 at the NRG Stadium Parking Lot – Big Power, Little Traction

(Photos by Charles Wickam) – Well it was one heck of an interesting weekend in the shadow of the Houston Astrodome as DigNight 2016 took place and brought some of the meanest no-prep, grudge, and tv famous race cars and people to a parking lot. Charles Wickam was our man on the scene and it sure was a scene. The crowd was OK, the cars were cool, and most of them spent their runs crab walking down the track with some degree of smoke and sideways action, then the Street Outlaws guys showed up and things really got interesting.

The production company behind the show puts some pretty intense regulations on promoters and assembled media at events where their “stars” are going to be appearing. Effectively they transform every location that the SO racers are at into a TV set where they call the shots about who sees, shoots, and shares what. This same scenario happened at DigNight and the guys over at SpeedVideo got the short end of the stick. They were there for a live broadcast that ended up getting stopped per order of the production company. Not cool and we’ve likely not heard the last of this situation.

On the non-drama side of the fence, people got to see some cool cars do what they do and attempt to get down a literal parking lot race track with the Houston Astrodome in the background. The only thing we’re wondering about is why, with all the tracks in the Houston area would they not put this event on an actual strip? We get the no prep, weird surface, “holy crap we’re racing in a parking lot” angle of the thing but it sure seems to us that the show would have been better on an actual drag strip. Then again, what the hell to we know?

Charles reports a strong crowd and lots of fun was had at the race. We’ll be back tomorrow with more!
