Gallery: Never Before Published 1960s Drag Photos From Great Lakes, Cordova, More!

(Photos by Darwin Busch) – Yesterday, photographer Brent Busch sent me a note and invited me to look at a bunch of photos that his dad took in the late 1960s at places like Grat Lakes Drag-o-Way, Cordova Dragway, and others. These photos captured the action and cool cars at one of the great periods in drag racing history. The sheer diversity you will see in funny car and dragster looks along makes this one worth while. The other think that makes this collection of photos great is the fact that there is plenty of star power here. From Gabby Bleeker’s fuel altered to Garlits, Schumacher, Dyno Don, Hayden Proffitt, and a bunch of others, all the big name hitters of the era are here.

We’re thankful to Brent for allowing us to use his dad’s photos like this. Apparently they were recently developed and scanned after sitting in a dusty box for many years. We bet Darwin is one of thousands of people who have collections of awesome stuff on film just waiting to be discovered. It gives us hope that images and scenes like this will be bleeding out onto the internet for years to come. These photos are so cool you can almost smell the burning fuel and tire smoke.

Thanks to Brent and Darwin Busch for sharing these photos. Hit the link below to see the gallery –

Is the “Jailbait” ’57 the old “Shake,Rattle and Roll”? That’s the only ’57 I remember from back then that had a black vinyl top & the wheel wells cut like that.

Brought back some good memories. I remember when all of them were making appearances across the match race circuit.

How Willie could keep that Altered in those skinny lanes speaks a lot of the times and the man.
