Gas-Tastic: This 1957 Chevrolet Is A Straight Axle, Tunnel-Rammed, Four Speed, Worn Paint Heap Of Perfection

I think it is fair to say that there are a couple of styles of cars that will literally never go out of style in hot rodding. 1932 Ford roadtsers will be around forever and 1955-1957 Chevys done in the gasser style will be as well. They embody the great looks of the period in which they raced, they have a cool “regular guy” feel to them as gassers were (for the most part) local, homebuilt efforts back then, and they have an attitude of toughness you really can’t forget about either. This car in particular is awesome to us because it does not fall into any of the typical traps that some other vehicles of this type do and there are a whole lot of buckets it could have fallen into.

For starters there’s the worn, patina’d paint which is just chalky enough to be fantastic and cool without being over the top and cartoony. There are a couple of decals on the car, a small name on the rear quarters, and a class designation, which are all subtle and cool, not glaring and nutty. There’s a sheet metal “grump lump” style scoop the likes of which you recognize from the ’55 in Two Lane Blacktop, and being that this is a Bel Air, it has the inserts in the rear quarters which are about as perfectly dulled as the paint. The white roof is also fantastic as are the bumper delete front end and vintage pie crust slicks out back.

Inside the car there’s a bench seat, a dash that is missing pieces, and a short shifter coming through the floor which is hooked to a four speed transmission. You can visualize the driver, hunkered down to get a good grip and staring at the tree, ready to dump the clutch and hammer the gears. The engine is a 10:1, 377ci small block Chevy with a tunnel ram, a pair of carbs, and enough gusto to shove this car down into the low 12s at the strip. The machine is street legal and registered as well so this is no trailer riding queen.

We’re not saying that this is some amazingly perfect period resto of a gasser but what we are saying is that we have seen enough over the top examples of the years to know a well built example when we see it and this car knocks it right out of the park, fender well headers and all. This is some BangShifty hotness right here!

Had a 55 similar in color back in the early 80’s. Name of the car was “Baby Huey”. It had a 301, 4 SPD T-10, and Pontiac rear. Bought it in pieces and never did put the car back together.

ANGRYJOE aint the brightest star in the night time sky if you get my drift…but ANGRYJOE knows bucket seats when ANGRYJOE sees them….
