This Is What It Looks Like Inside A Pro Mod When The Clutch Explodes – WOW!

This Is What It Looks Like Inside A Pro Mod When The Clutch Explodes – WOW!

Clutch explosions are some of the most fearsome and dangerous catastrophes a drag racer can face. Obviously things have gotten a lot better since the days of the 1960s when drivers were maimed or even killed when the era’s clutches would fail and saw cars into pieces. Containment style bell housings or clutch cans have made the outward ferocity of a clutch explosion far less than it once was, but don’t think for a second that they still aren’t nasty. This video is proof.

Shot in Australia during the 2009 racing season we’re in the car with a racer who was just going to make a launch and shut off style test run (according to some stuff he posted after the video). Because this was just going to be a short squirt, he did not have the visor down on his helmet, resulting in some facial burns from the fire and molten material flying around the inside of the car. Not to dig on the guy but has everyone forgotten guys like Lee Shepherd who met their end by short cutting safety on a test pass? Sorry for the PSA here but please, if you are in a race car and driving it, take the same precautions you’d make as if you were in the finals at the US Nationals….every lap. You will be a better and safer racer for it.

The fireball that comes out of the can is amazing and the driver claimed that the inspection plate blew off the car, allowing the fire to escape. Was the plate tight? Was there a design flaw? Who knows but we do know that there was no warning that this was about to happen and that the driver is lucky the only thing he left this nightmare with was a singed eyebrow or two.

Make sure you spend some money on transmission containment, even if you don\’t have a screw blown hemi. A decent bag to wrap around a turbo 400 isn\’t much!

Im one of the most annoying people when it comes to safety. Just last night I got pounced on by a bunch of guys on Instagram because apparently they believe it’s fine for a certain street racer to race wearing a sweater, jeans, tennis shoes, and maybe a helmet depending one how he feels that day. I will ALWAYS have my visor down, and Ive always been nervous about the “if” of a tranny explosion. Always be prepared. You never know when it’s gonna happen.
