More Action! Opening The Archives Of Street Car SuperNationals Past!

(Photos by James Drew, Tim Marshall and Darr Hawthorne – Words by Darr Hawthorne)  The Street Car Supernationals hit its twelfth year at the Strip at Las Vegas; it wasn’t possible for me to make this edition. I’ve spent hours and hours on that Southeast Nevada starting line and in the pits, I’ve seen some awesome racing action, but after the NHRA Las Vegas race, the SEMA Show and the Pomona NHRA Finals; I’m taking a break.

My affection for the Pacific Street Car Association and the Street Car Supernationals has gone on for over a dozen years, when I first found PSCA at the old south dragstrip at Fontana, CA; I loved the action, diversity of engines and bodies, but most of all enjoyed some of the quickest doorcar action in the west.

Over the years we’ve lost some of the greatest people, like my friend Monty Berney (above) and his Big Bertha Blown ’55 Chevy.

Recently, a retired (nearly dead) hard drive came back to life and many of the SCSN races of the earlier years have now surfaced. Time for sharing and as Brian Lohnes stands atop the official BangShift moho streaming the racetrack action for SCSN 12, I’m going to post some of the photo highlights of past years.

Quite frankly, I’ve got the Mecum Auction near Disneyland this weekend, then the PRI show in Indy and the Mooneyes Xmas Party back home in Irwindale, CA. I also need to catch up on the Painless wiring of our LA Valiant Mopar BangShift project, sitting in the Glassell Park shop.

Project LA Valiant is a silver ’69 Plymouth, a $5,500 Craigslist find that now holds a 500 horsepower Mopar 410 small block with an A833 Hurst-shifted 4-speed. We’ve already installed a QA1 Phase 2 front suspension kit with a tubular K-member and a bunch of other cool parts from Aeromotive including a Stealth Mopar tank, a McLeod Racing dual disc clutch and hydraulic throw-out bearing, Hedman Hedders, IQ3 Digital Dash from Racepak, a Holley 4 barrel, Moroso, ISKY, Eaton, Edelbrock heads, Milodon pan and pump, etc. It’s a build that’ll be written about in a month or so.

So here are some highlight photos from previous Street Car Supernationals (2005, 2006 & 2009) at LVMS over the years, some of the best doorcars in the USA who arrive in Vegas to race against the best.  Here’s a gallery.
