More Sportsman Action Photos From Mt. Park Dragway – Wheelies, Hemis, Big Fun!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Quain Stott was very clear when he told me the two exhibition cars running with the Southeast Gassers were not to be included in the photos with them.  Why…?  Well, because people see them being outside the established rules to run in the group then ask questions and generally make life difficult for him.

One of the two is shown here as the Dixie Twister, altered-wheelbase fastback Nova.  This thing is a hoot to watch and looks like it rolled right out of a history book.  Much goodness.  Next up is one the cars we’ve seen here over the years and it still does the same dance.  Most folks running brackets try to avoid big wheelies, but this thing has been putting on a show clearing the beams like this with consistency for a long time.  The ‘Blast from the Past’ ’38 Chevy is definitely one of our all-time favorites.

The recreated, tribute, or whatever you want to call it ‘Kentucky Kolonel’ sports a Ray Barton 572 Hemi and definitely has the beans to get folks up out of their seats.  We dig the old Mopars coming out and strutting their stuff.  There is a huge Mopar event at Mt. Park Dragway every fall and many of the Hemi Shootout cars come out to play.  They even have a class for slant-sixes.  Don’t be fooled….some of these run in the single digits…!!!

Enjoy.
