Ohio Mile Coverage: The 2016 Opener And Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge

Ohio Mile Coverage: The 2016 Opener And Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge

(Photos by David Whealon – DWPhotos) – The first meet of the 2016 ECTA Ohio Mile racing season had something for everyone. There were huge numbers put up by some competitors, tons of new records set, and for the first time at the Ohio Mile, the event featured racing on Friday as well. Unfortunately there was also a serious crash involving motorcycle racer Guy Caputo. Guy is very banged up and in the hospital now but thanks to his safety equipment he survived a crash that looked to have taken place at north of 200mph. Because of that event and rain that came in after it, Saturday action was cut short. A full day of fun came along with Sunday and some fun runs in the HotRod Magazine Top Speed Challenge.

Eventual winners were Jay Bell in Real Street who ran 229mph and C. Douglas Johnson in Super Street who ran 222mph after being challenged by the likes of Drag Week veteran Clark Rosenstengal and perennial hard charger Brian Acton. Fittingly it was a Chevrolet in Real Street and a Ford in Super Street taking the class victories.

It was, indeed, a great meet. Those who didn’t show because the weather “might be bad” – well, to heck with them! While I only ran Friday due to an iffy clutch (like driving on ice) there was great action. I decided to head home early but it was SO worth it.

BTW – David has LOTS more pics of the meet on his website so if you don’t see what you like on this page I suggest you go peruse the rest of the pics.

Sounds like Guy will be more or less OK. I mean, he never was “normal”. Buddy, know we’re all pullin’ for you and we wish you a speedy recovery.

Surely there must be somewhere in the UK with enough asphalt or concrete to have our very own LSR event. If not will somebody please build one preferably near Newcastle upon Tyne….
