Well this is about as crazy as it gets. The driver of the Mustang you see enveloped in flames above was competing at a no-prep event recently when hr wrecked the car and it went up like a Chinese fireworks factory, melting itself pretty good before safety officials were able to get the flames knocked down. The driver had his race clearly won in this video but the car was unsettled and that slight unsettled situation morphed itself into a full on catastrophe when he tried to fix it, rotating the car into the wall hard and touching off this fire.

We’re not “anti” no-prep racing around here. It is the latest in a number of growing crazes around the country focused on “street” like conditions but contained on a drag strip and we like that math. Sure it has risks inherent to it and crashes will happen but the reality is that people crash on prepared tracks all the time as well. This type of racing is another challenge that people have setup for themselves in drag racing and that’s pretty much been the nature of the sport since the earliest days when different fuels were regulated, and the rule book got thicker and thicker. Also, note how many people are at the track. You cannot see the whole crowd but on the left side of the frame you can get a good idea that there are LOTS of people jammed into the track.

Considering that the IndyCar race drew a grand total of about 3,000 spectators last weekend in Fontana, California, this no-prep event at the small eighth mile facility it was hosted drew a major percentage of that on its own! People want to talk about the sport of drag racing dying and I will harp on it to my final breath. The “sport” is way bigger than two sanctioning bodies and events like this prove it. Lots of people…YOUNG people love this stuff and you can see why. Wild runs, danger, and as long as everyone walks away, we’re good with it.
