For those unfamiliar with the wild and wonky world of NHRA competition eliminator, the altered classes may be a bit confusing. This is one time in drag racing when the world altered does not strictly mean a short wheelbase care that’s essentially a funny car with an open body. Nope, dare we say that the majority of cars running in Altered are actually door slammers, many of them former pro stock cars. Like in all other classes, the deeper we go into the alphabet, the smaller the engines get. In this video we are riding along in the D/Altered of Erich Bollman. This car has a 318ci small block Ford that has made nearly 900hp…NATURALLY ASPIRATED. Know what that means? Tremendous rpm.
This car also has a manual transmission and Bollman is darned handy with that piece of equipment, knocking through a couple gears on the burnout and really letting the thing have it on the run down the quarter mile at Cecil County Dragway in Maryland. There are few things on Earth better sounding than a little small block at five digit RPM and this thing is absolutely at the five digit RPM realm by the time it crosses the finish line in the run you will watch. What do you think? 11,000? 11,500? We want to know how the valve springs survive a single run, let alone multiple runs.

You have to wonder what the engine RPM is on the Limiter just before launch. So many things in the drivetrain need to be super duty bulletproof to take that sort of abuse.

comp eliminator is a good class but they was more unique combinations
in the old modified class
