South Georgia Motorsports Park Hit By Tornado – Luxury Boxes Annihilated, Tower OK

A day and night of wild weather in the southeast has left South Georgia Motorsports Park a mess but (thankfully) largely intact. A tornado struck the track  and hammered the local area causing lots of damage and sadly some fatalities. South Georgia Motorsports Park has been preparing to gear up for Lights Out 8, the massive small tire and radial race that it hosts each February.

The majority of the damage at the facility was isolated to the track’s luxury boxes which sat atop the main grandstand. The winds and violence of the weather caused them to be all but completely destroyed. Most of the debris from the former structure appears to have fallen on the main grandstand but there are some pieces of suite on the track as well. A couple of the top end light poles were felled according to this video.

To this point, the track has vowed to clean up and be ready for Lights Out 8. Will there by luxury boxes? We’re not taking those odds because it would be a tall order to get them built before the show in February. We’re not saying it is impossible but improbably would be what we’s say.

When we get more information on the condition of the facility, we’ll share it with you.

Check out this video from the track below –

Im amazed the tower survived. I have no doubt in my mind they’ll get it all cleaned up before the race. I’ve seen a few rumors floating around the internet that it’s delayed, and that scares me. Ive seen first person what can happen to an event simply because of a rumor, and people refusing to look for facts (a certain Mopar magazine made up the cancellation of an event because they didn’t like the promoter). It needs to get out there that the race is still on. Also, Im willing to bet they do something with where the suites formerly were. Whether it be handrails and a great place to stand and watch, or fully completed, brand new suites. Its gonna happen before the race.
