Ten Cars, One Quarter Mile: Motor Trend’s World’s Greatest Drag Race 5!

Ten Cars, One Quarter Mile: Motor Trend’s World’s Greatest Drag Race 5!

In what has turned into tradition for the guys over at Motor Trend, the field of new cars battling it out for the title in their annual Best Driver’s Car series are hauled off to an airport runway, lined up, and raced all at once. It’s excess, it tests nothing for the Best Driver’s Car series except for quarter mile times, and it’s awesome. Hey, any time you get to see a ten-wide drag race, take it.

This year’s competition showed off one cool thing: how fast cars have really gotten. In the 10-car group, the slowest car was the Mazda Miata. At 155 horsepower, it was going to be last in a field has such hard-hitters as the heavyweight Bentley GT3-R, the Corvette Z06 (actually, the second Z06 they tested, since the first one got wounded), and both Cadillac V-series cars. But even with Micro Machine horsepower, a 14.5@92 out of the Miata is nothing to sneeze at. Only one other car, the Volkswagen Golf R, was out of the twelves, and just barely at that, with a 13.1@104….that’s one fast lunchbox. As for the faster cars, you will just have to watch the video to see for yourself how they did. Gotta love horsepower…

And noticeable missing is either of the Hellcats.

Why pay $94,860 for an 11 second Corvette? I’ll take the Hellcat and pay $63,308 for a 10 second car. More bang for the buck.

Worlds Greatest Drag Race is a part of Motor Trends’ Best Drivers Car which includes a 4 mile twisty road test as well as a laps around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Motor Trend said they didn’t include the Hellcats because they didn’t think either had a shot at taking the crown.

PS McTaggart it’s Motor Trend not Road and Track
