This 1966 Pontiac 2+2 Has A 421, A Four Speed, And 8-Lugs – We’re In Love!

I guess I am hooked on big cars from the 1960s this week. The other day it was the monstrous Olds 98 and today it is the smaller but equally as awesome 1966 Pontiac 2+2 that has a four speed, a tri-power equipped 421 engine, and those awesome eight lug Pontiac wheels that we have loved since the first time we saw them.

The 2+2 had an interesting, if short lived history. Obviously when you think of a 2+2 to tend to think of smaller cars. The Mustang was marketed as a 2+2 to some degree, then there’s the Datsun Z cars that had their 2+2 models as well. This honkin’ B-body Pontiac doesn’t exactly fit into the same mold as those cars but John Z Delorean was always looking for that kind of European flare that he could inject and it came in the form of a name on this car. The 2+2 began as an option on the Catalina and then for 1966 it was its own model. By the end of 1967 it had been cancelled.

Sold as the kind of larger brother to the GTO, the cars had good parts and performance potential. This car came with the 338hp version of the 421 but the heaviest duty example of the engine in 1966 made 376hp which would have made this car a mover for sure.

While we normally do not skew toward the convertibles around here at BangShift this car is a fine looking machine with the top down. The Coke bottle styling of these Pontiacs gives them a really awesome belt line and when the roof is gone you eye just wants to follow it all the way down the side of the car.

We could totally see ourselves pulling this car onto the highway, yanking fourth and stretching it out for a good while with the top down. Sure it is more of a cruiser/boulevard bruiser than a romper stomper street racer or drag strip machine but we love it all the same.
