This 1967 Fram Oil Filters Ad Featuring Don Garlits Is Totally Cool – Trippy, Man!

If you were looking to appeal to the exploding muscle car enthusiast crowd in the late 1960s and needed a name that they not only knew but viewed in a god-like fashion, you got Don Garlits to endorse your products. Such was the case in 1967 when Fram made the ad you’ll see below pitching their oil filter line to hot rodders and horsepower freaks alike. One of the interesting facets of this ad is that we never actually see Don outside of the car or even outside of his fire mask. In fact, this video clip is a good look at how advertising had evolved from the 1950s when it was pretty commonplace to have your famed endorser standing and talking about the product they were telling you to buy. In this case, the subject was so famous among the target audience the need to actually see him was zilch. The top fuel slingshot does the talking in this video as Garlits does not have a speaking line.

The messaging is predictable and continues to be used today. Basically, if the filter is strong enough to survive in the environment of a nitro burning dragster, it’ll have no problem running in your family car or truck. There are some “modern” techniques employed here with the quick edits and constantly changing shots that vary from wide angle stuff at the track to concentrated imagery right on the subject itself.
