This Chrysler Galant Is One Mean Little Bastard! In The Eights With 2.6 Liters Of Pissed Off Four Banger!

Street Hemi, Cobra Jet, Boss, Wildcat, Rocket, Mark IV, TNT, Magnum…we know the classic names for some of the baddest engines that came out of Detroit back when, and we know the modern interpretations just as well: LS, Coyote, Voodoo, Eagle and Apache Hemi. But the U.S. markets weren’t the only companies to name their engines. Here’s a name you probably have never given thought to: Astron. That’s the Mitsubishi 2.6L four-cylinder that we got in the U.S. market in such vehicles as the second-generation Dodge Challenger, Chrysler Conquest, Dodge D-50, Plymouth Fire Arrow, certain K-cars, and the Mazda B2600. With possible exception of the Conquest, not much though is given to the performance capabilities of the Astron, but leave any engine in the hands of a bored Aussie and you’ll promptly see just how much power one can honestly crank out. In this case, a Chrysler Galant packing a very boosted 2.6L is pushing enough power down to crack off 8.83@150 MPH. Remember…that’s the engine that made work in a Dodge D-50 here.

I had a 1979 D-50 with a swapped-in 2.6 from a 1981 Sapporo. I pitched the stock carb for a down-draft Weber and drove the crap out of that truck. I loved it!
