Turbocharged Barra FTW! This Little Ford Cortina Gets Moving With Six Buzzing!

Turbocharged Barra FTW! This Little Ford Cortina Gets Moving With Six Buzzing!

I’m still working on the culture shock I experienced when it comes to a turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine that can run. For an engine design that I’ve always figured was the automotive equivalent of a tractor engine dumped into the nearest body shell, experiencing what a well-prepared inline-six can do was a revelation. It’s not a surprise, though…I’ve been watching what the Australians do with the Barra, Ford Australia’s 4.0L inline six from the Falcon lineup. Much like GM LS engines here, add a turbocharger to the mix and an ordinary production engine suddenly becomes Superman. Shove said engine into a much lighter, older and cooler ride, and you have a winning combination on your hands. See, Ford and Chevy guys, you do have something in common!

This Cortina is pushing 600 horsepower and was pushing it’s luck on the strip, since it didn’t have all of it’s safety equipment on board for the runs.  But once it gets finished up right, this little machine will be deflating egos aplenty!

you mentioned ` add a turbo’ – these (optionally) come from the factory with a turbo. The heat shields etc on that engine in the corty are factory.. but yep they are amazing engines. Common as over here too, pick up whole running cars for a grand , engines from the wreckers for a couple of hundred..

Get rid of those stick shift transmissions and put in a \’plain jane\’ powerglide and ladder bars and those things would be real trouble in \’ET Brackets\’ Wow,.. impressive!
