Watch a Cross Ram Equipped AMC 401 Grind Out 480hp and More than 500 ft/lbs on the Dyno

The AMC 401 is an oft overlooked mill for performance building. Yes, the guys in the AMC crowd would gash you with a rusty connecting rod in order to get their mits on one, but the 401 definitely doesn’t get the love it deserves from lots of BangShifters. The good news is that those hard core fans dedicated to the killers from Kenosha are continuing to build cool junk. This video is proof.

The engine shown on the dyno is a 401 equipped with a sweet cross ram and dual carbs. Portland Engine Rebuilders put the combo together (for a customer we suppose) and ran the engine on their dyno during an open house. Even with a mild cam, the engine made 480hp and more than 520 ft/lbs at only 5,000RPM. The torque peak came at 4300RPM and the engine was running on pump gas. This engine would be totally awesome in an Ambassador or Javelin. We can’t even remember the last time we saw an AMC equipped with a cross ram!
