Watch A Crazy Supercharged Nova Beat Out A Worked Up Lambo At A Half Mile Roll Race In Arizona – Nova Is Very, Very Loose

Watch A Crazy Supercharged Nova Beat Out A Worked Up Lambo At A Half Mile Roll Race In Arizona – Nova Is Very, Very Loose

The idea of half mile drag racing on airport runways is certainly not new, but is has been going through somewhat of a resurgence over the last several years and that resurgence has apparently reached Arizona where this video was filmed. In the footage below you will see a really pissed off blown Nova drag car take on a Lamborghini in a side by side, half mile drag race, at the No Fly Arizona event which was held just a short while back. As you will hear, the Nova isn’t really hooked up to the surface at any point (at least that is what it sounds like to us) and the driver is working the throttle hard to (a) win the race and (b) not scatter his car and body parts like a yard sale across Arizona. We’re not 100% sure but we bet that the Lambo is an AWD car and the Nova was probably tailing out of the gate but the big blown motor makes a strong top end charge and pulls by the Lambo right in front of the camera man. It sounds mean!

If you are wondering what the rules are for this event, there don’t seem to be any in the way of tech and stuff. Drivers have to wear a helmet, tires will be checked for speed rating, passengers may be allowed, and that’s about it. An organization called Omega Motorsports put on the event and it was held at Gila Bend Airfield in Gila Bend, Arizona. We’re not sure if there will be more or what the story is but we do know that this one was attended by a bunch of people and at least one Lambo owner went home telling a story about a bad ass Nova!

… this result comes more down to Italian/German pretense and a More Money than Brains owner stupid enough to think his stock AudiGhini could stand up to a well built muscle car/hot rod in an straight line contest of any distance rather than any perceived superiority of American horsepower

Now try the same race with say one of Ruf’s most recent top of the line 911 offerings …. and you’ll see an entirely different result e.g. …. which is to say …. bye bye Nova …

      1. Tedly

So you are of the belief that a 750+ hp car that is set up for optimal handling would trounce what is probably a 750+ hp car set up specifically for straight line acceleration in a drag race?

        Please do explain.

        1. ColoradoKid

Ahem … did I not make myself clear with the Nova trouncing the AudiGhini that the opposite was the case ?

But …. if its the Ruf I mentioned you’re referring to … you might want to look into the hp stats as well as the 0-60 , 1/4 mile , standing mile times of Ruf’s ultimate 911 … then factor in vastly superior aerodynamics [ forget about that aspect perhaps ? ] as well as much higher power to weight ratio [ forgot that little tid bit as well I presume ] ..

… before trying to come off all high and mighty Mr Superior knowledge GearHead as you did with this [ very ] little reply

That explanation enough for y’all Tedly ?

          1. ColoradoKid

And err .. Tedly ole bean . Just to be clear as to where I stand on all this . Replace the hot rodded aerodynamic ‘ brick ‘ Nova with one of Troy Trepanier’s fire breathing muscle car monsters that have had their aerodynamics massaged almost as much as the engines by the master himself and …

Suffice it to say even the Koenigsegg One;1 would be in for the fight of its life 😉

          2. Tedly

The RUF CTR3, which is what I believe you are referring to, has a curb weight of about 3088lbs, give or take, and horsepower level of about 775 I believe. It has an estimated 1/4 mile of 11.0 at 132mph and mile of 27.8 at 182. I wish I could give more precise numbers but unfortunately finding hard numbers on this particular model were difficult on short notice.

Now, there is no way of knowing the curb weight of the Nova, but they left the factory at around 3166 or so for the pre-big bumper era. Given the fact that the Nova is tubbed and has a chute, you can probably assume that it has a roll cage. No way of knowing how much work has been done to lighten the car, but a “much higher hp/weight ratio”? Not quite as much as you seem to believe.

Judging by the evidence in that video, that Nova more than has an 11 second car covered, aerodynamic advantage or not. The biggest advantage a RUF would have in this circumstance would be traction, and that would make all the difference in the world if it simply hooked better than the nova.

          3. Tedly

Now let’s review in light of some new information, shall we? The Nova has 1700hp, so even though we don’t know the weight, I’d imagine the weight/hp ratio is pretty good compared to the RUF.

Now, if we are still correct about this being a 1/2 mile race, then the Nova’s speed of 176 says that it would annihilate the CTR3’s 17.1, 157mph half.

          4. Tedly

Next time you feel like being a condescending douche towards me, don’t. Showing you exactly how full of shit you are isn’t exactly fun and I’d have to drop 40 IQ points to have a battle of wits with you and have it be any where near even. As it is it’s like kicking sand in your face at the beach.

You want to bench race, kick around ideas, and just generally bull shit? I got no problem with that.

Just leave your arrogant troll bullshit at the door.

    2. ColoradoKid

BWTM ; Seen the HP numbers of say the stock off the line Koenigsegg Agera R , Gumpert Apollo etc ?

        1. ColoradoKid

          Hmmmmn … lets see now ..err … Bahahahahahahahahahahaha ! Damn .. I’m laughing so hard it hurts on that one . But as to the facts ;

Koenigsegg Agera R – 1140 proven …. and more importantly …. independently VERIFIED horsepower

Dodge Asthmatic Kitty Hellcat – 750 yet to be independently verified [ or proven ] with an off the showroom stock horsepower

Hell …. even if FCA wasn’t lying thru their double speak mouths [ which they are ] the Agera R has near double the STOCK … and once again Independently verified [with a customers car I might add] horsepower as that pretentious now 15 year old Mercedes E Class masquerading as a Dodge Challenger with a pretentious and meaningless Hellcat moniker on its hood intended to deceive

And err … just to add insult to injury …. look at the size [ and weight ] of the Agera’s motor versus the over sized lead elephant in the snout of the Hellcat ..

          Errrr …. Bahahahahahahahahaha 1

You know … I just remembered a quote from a sort of favorite Film that applies to you and all the MOPAR delusional when it comes to Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouths built since the late 60’s

” Once you got their heads around something they know isn’t true .. you’ve got them right in the palm of your hand ” [ ” Sin City ” ]

Which is to say in case thats a little too high brow for you to get your head around .

Congratulations . You’ve been had …. by the master himself … Stronzetto Marchionne

Ahhhh … you MOPAR delusional and your pretentious Asthmatic Kitty … will wonders never cease 😉

Let me have my morning reply to the Al Sharpton of Bangshift, that’s you GuitarSlinger/ColoradoKid.
The stock horsepower of a Hell Cat Challenger/Charger is 707 horsepower, not the 750 as YOU stated.
The Charger/300 use the same LX base, the Dodge Challenger uses a similar platform, but it is all its own design. Having been under both vehicles when I worked at a Dodge dealership I’ve seen them both.
The Chrysler LX platform was never based off of a Mercedes E class, and unless you have the proof, then show it to us fellow Bangshifters.

          2. 75Duster

I also have a quote from a Clint Eastwood film that applies to you GuitarSlinger/ColoradoKid.
“You are a legend in your own mind.” (Heartbreak Ridge).
The only thing around here that is asthmatic and pretentious is you and your pompous attitude.
Unlike you, many of us work for a living, and we aren’t trust fund babies like you who spend the whole day looking up MSRP’s on European exotic cars that many can’t afford or want, then try to bullshit your “knowledge” on Bangshift. You are the Al Sharpton of Bangshift.

Judging by the trail of tire smoke, I’d say you’re right about it not hooking up! And that Gallardo is almost surely AWD. There were only a handful of special editions that were RWD, the rest were all AWD.

    1. ColoradoKid

Correction . There was exactly One RWD Gallarado . The Balboni special edition . And this Gallarado aint it

      1. Tedly

You mean the 250 or so of the special edition Gallardos named after the Lamborghini test driver?

Could that be what I meant when I said a handful of special editions?

Ok let’s set the record straight. Brian (lambo owner) did in fact beat me (nova guy). Brian is a great guy very straight up. This was my first event and I had a blast. The actual speed of the nova was 182.6 and she is a bit of a brick at 3950 with my passenger. I look forward to racing Brian again if he beats me again its all good. We just wan to have fun and meet some cool people and we did. Much respect Brian. The nova is all steel except the hood engine is 340 cu.in. dart block. RHS iron heads, a whipple R980 lots of boost, alcohol and a hughes XP4 powerglide. would love to have the chance to line up with Brian again.

          1. Tedly

If either of you guys got any events you’re going to be at throw them up here. I’d like to see both of you in action more.

  2. project bloodline

Actually I gave the nova a three car length head start and blew by him shortly after we passed this camera. Next time, please write the facts

      1. project bloodline

Video view from my car will be up on project bloodline Facebook page in next few days. When driver in nova will tell you he didn’t win. I went 204 mph he went 176.

        1. Tedly

9 seconds in what I’m assuming is the quarter, a handful of 200+mph slips, OK, you are legit and a legit badass,

In fairness, when you overtake you are obscured by tire smoke from the angle in this video.

        2. greg

Not really caring who won the race so i’m not doggin anyone but i will say this from what can be seen and heard on this video the nova did a hell of a job to stay as close as it did by #1 peddlin twice and completely gettin out of it once #2 i’m sure bein set up as a dragcar not a top speed car and last …by keepin it under control and not wipin both cars out cuz we all know when it comes to racin the link between the brain to the right foot liften sometimes doesnt work as quick as it should!!! OOPS i forgot unless your COLRADOKID !!!

Ruf and Koenigsegg? Why not throw something equally common like the Apollo 11 rocket in the mix? I see a Lamborghini many times a year, common compared to the other two, which I have never seen in person in 49 years. Let’s not even mention price compared to a Nova of all things.

  4. greg

Ok i see COLORADOKID is showing he is such the genius once again??????? I have no clue where you seen or come up where the HELLCAT has 750 horse, every article i’ve read shows 707 hp for a HELLCAT and thats in any form…..CHARGER OR CHALLENGER AND RUMORED TRUCK ! And i see your throwing some big horsepower numbers around but you didnt mention the biggest one you really know about and i’m sure it’s more than Larson’s S-10 and Baileys Sicksecond 2.0 speculated horsepower numbers put together….shit for what i’ve read on hear i think it could be more than Force’s funnycar…..what puts out more horsepower than Force’s funnycar you ask…..your fuckin arrogant ramblin mouth!!!!!!!

The Nova is a fast car for sure but the Lamborghini beat it. The Nova was given the hit (on purpose) and did have traction issues. The Lamborghini passed it and put lengths on it by the end. Trap speed for the Lamborghini was 200+ (I don’t rember the exact number) and the Nova was 188 if I’m not mistaken. Still an awesome race with two awesome cars!

  7. ratpatrol66

I don’t give a damn who won or lost and who spotted who lengths, and I really don’t give a shit about colorado kids opinion! This was a cool video!!!
The Nova peddled and lifted before crossing the big white stripe. Shut up and watch it again with the sound turned to 10!

  8. Dan H

Both cars are sweet. The way it looks, a little less gear in the nova and traction may be a little better and the top end will be faster since it’s got the power to pull it. Then it would be a whole different outcome.

  9. Dan H

Also, let’s clear something up. Until you hear the blower, the nova is nowhere near full throttle. That means roughly half of the race before the cars cross in front of the camera is done with a Lamborghini on full tilt and a nova being babied. Once he finally does get all the way in it, it climbs up on the tire and we witness a pedal fest. All that hoopla and the Lamborghini just manages to get around him after they go bye the camera. Three car head start or not, get the nova hooked up and under full power early, and the Lamborghini will look like a Prius.
