Watch Doorslammer Legend Tommy Mauney Get A Facefull Of Fire At Shady Side Dragway

Tommy Mauney (pronounced Mooney) is one of the great door slammer chassis builders and racers of all time. He was there for the beginning of pro mod, developed lots of the stuff that has been refined into race cars today, once built two pro mods based around alcohol funny car bodies with a door cut in them, and he’s won more races than we can imagine over the years. The best part? He’s still out there doing it!

In this video from the Racebarn Motorsports YouTube channel we see Maundy lined up with Chris Cline in the legendary Christine Plymouth pro mod. Mauney is in a far more traditional Camaro bodied car and aside from the bodies, there’s the cool factor that it is a blower combo taking on a nitrous car. All of this is awesome.

Things get less awesome for Mauney when he’s just past the 330′ mark and his windshield is suddenly a fire shield because there are flames licking up over the roof of the Camaro. The engine suffered some sort of a valve train (or associated part) failure that caused the manifold explosion and there was plenty of stuff thereto burn. Tommy was unhurt but this is some impressive looking flame here.

On the plus side, the throttle blades were open so it all had somewhere to go. If the blades were closed, it gets lots more expensive because the intake normally gets killed along with the scoop. Whoops!
