Chad and I are at the NMCA/NMRA All Star Nationals this weekend and there are a ton of pro mods here. Likely someone will have to make a save for themselves over the course of the weekend but there won’t be any heroics like this, we bet. Talk about an all-timer.
The place was Maryland International Raceway. The driver was Dwayne Wolfe. The car was his blown, alcohol Camaro pro mod, and the situation was the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod race that was happening last night. There were nearly two dozen similar machines on the grounds and Wolfe like everyone else, was trying to lay down the biggest and baddest number of the evening. Things actually got off to a good start as the Mike Janis supercharged Camaro leapt off the line and was flat driving away from the nitrous car in the other lane when the car instantly lost traction and Wolfe put on a display of defensive driving the likes of which have rarely ever been see on a drag strip.
It looked at first that the car was going to broadside swipe the wall but he wrestled it the other way, up on two wheels, back down onto the ground and then the thing started spinning and swapping directions in the center of the track. After violently swapping directions more times than we have ever seen a car do it in a single run, the black Camaro came to rest on the track with a header that was likely scuffed (the sparks you see) and likely little else. We do not think that a quarter panel got into the wall but if it did, the impact was little more than a kiss.
Yes, a couple things worked in Wolfe’s favor here but the reality is that he was working his tail off inside that car to try and keep it from being mangled and he succeeded! This is an amazing video, especially because of the happy ending!
