Watch This Turbo Mustang Drag Car Break A Wheelie Bar And Literally Launch Itself Completely Off The Ground

The wheelie bar may be one of the most under appreciated components on any serious drag race car today. People call them “sissy sticks” and have a host of other more profane names for them but the reality is that with the ever improving world of tires and suspension components, the wheelie bar is often a necessary part of getting a heavy duty car down the track these days. When you see crew members measuring the bars or adjusting their height at the starting line before a car leaves, that is a critical part of the tuning of the machine. Why? If the driver is planning on having those bars essentially control the car for the first part of a run when the front wheels are in the air they need to be even and they need to be at the right height. Too low and the car will smash them into the ground, likely unloading the rear tires and causing the run to be a waste. Too high and the car may be in such a wheelie that it will scrub elapsed time off or it will be a situation that the driver cannot control. Then there is option three which is what happens on this run where the bars themselves are set, locked down, and then break!

This driver is fortunate that the bars failed like they did because it allowed the car to stay on a decently straight path and it didn’t throw the Mustang into a barrel roll as we have seen a bunch of times before. Perhaps the most impressive part of this video is the fact that the car has such immense power that it literally heaves itself completely, 100% airborne after the bar breaks. We’ve all heard “that guy” telling a story about how he dumped the clutch in his race car and it leapt off the ground, well this guy actually did it. Other videos over the years have shown us that turbocharged drag cars certainly have the power to wheelie themselves into trouble at any point on the strip, especially on the front half of a run like this one. A couple times on Drag Week we saw Larry Larson’s truck head to the starting line with no bars on it and were worried about a big wheelie like this one. Thankfully, that did not happen.

The flight was short and the landing was rough, but this dude went for one heck of a ride! Press play below to see the Urban Hillbilly capture of this nutty run!
