The 2014 Silver State Classic Challenge – Checking Out The Field At America’s Longest Running Open Road Race

The 2014 Silver State Classic Challenge – Checking Out The Field At America’s Longest Running Open Road Race

(Photos by Randal Burns) – The 2014 Silver State Classic Challenge in Nevada is happening this weekend and it is headquartered in the bustling metropolis of Ely, Nevada. This happens to be the home of BangShift’s resident geologist Randal Burns as well. Burns is a hot rodder and an OG BangShifter along with a dude who makes his living checking rocks at a big mine in the Ely area. For those of you who have never been to Ely, it is a small frontier feeling town that most people pass through on the way from Los Angeles to Bonneville. In fact, many people travel on the very highways that are closed for this race to happen on making that trip to the salt.

The Silver State Classic Challenge race is one of the longest (maybe THE longest) running race of its kind in the USA and there are a multitude of classes that competitors can enter. From the wide open 200+ mph cars to the slower “entry level” classes where racers try to average speeds like 100 to 110mph it is a race where a huge variety of talent levels and equipment levels compete on some of the more scenic and interesting highways the USA has to offer. On the way to Bonneville this year, Chad and I went through the vaunted “Esses” portion of the course in our junk ass SUV at 80 and tried to envision at 200. Both of us nearly peed a little.

Randal checked out the field for the 2014 Silver State Classic Challenge and sent us this gallery of the cooler entires in the field during what looks to be tech inspection at the high school football stadium in Ely. From stock cars to super cars this is a neat group of iron!
