Action Gallery: Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series – The World’s Most Valuable Demo Derby

(Words and photos by David Whealon) – While the focus of the Oak Tree Grand Prix at Virginia International Speedway was centered on the Tudor United Sports Car Series the action sure wasn’t limited to the all GT cars event. The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series was there to fill in the gaps with their one-make brand of excitement of their own. With the Huracán LP 620-2 and the Gallardo LP570-4 racecars pitted together, the action was non-stop with three 50 minute sprint races scattered throughout the weekend.

With 23 bullfighting Pro-Am Lambo drivers trying to get along together on the track they sure put on one heck of a show. The 620 hp Huracán had the edge over the lesser 570 hp Gallardo which made for plentiful passing and lots of work for the VIR track crew.

There were more crashes than the Saturday night Nascar Bristol race. It was a good thing they had plenty of readymade tire barriers in stock. Such a shame to see all that fine (and expensive) Italian metal being hauled off on the rollback. I’m sure Ferruccio Lamborghini was rolling over and holding his eyes from his suite at the Certosa di Bologna Monumental Cemetery after this one.
