The American Powertrain Parting Shift: Ripping Along In A Road Course Tuned Late Model Stock Car

So this is easily the best ride you are going to take from your desk today. Why? You are about to strap into a late model stock car that has been converted and altered to kick ass on the road course. The car normally races with the NASA series in their Super Late Model category and as you will see in this video, it absolutely hauls ass.

The cool thing here for us is that we get to see the driver (who obviously knows what the hell he is doing) come out on course and work the tires and drivetrain up to temperature. There’s a guy in a Corvette that he lets by at the beginning and you’ll see that Corvette until the late model driver gets serious. Once that happens the Corvette is gone like a bad dream!

The sound of the small block engine, the ease with which the driver shifts gears, and the cornering prowess of the race car all add up to a really fun video that borders on the hypnotic. We think it is interesting how much time the car spends in third and not fourth gear. Third seems to keep the engine in the happy zone for the majority of the track and it allows the car to really power out of the corners.

Overall this seems like a fun car to drive. Yes, there are a few times when the driver has to catch the machine coming out of a corner or something but that’s the fun, right? We’d definitely pay a nickel to watch a brace of these cars hammer on each other around a road course. The sounds and the sights would definitely beat watching some junkers do the same thing at half the speed, right?
