This Modified Eldorado Looks Angry, But Does It Have Bite To Its Bark? [Probably Not]

This Modified Eldorado Looks Angry, But Does It Have Bite To Its Bark? [Probably Not]

Before they introduced the CTS-V in 2004, no one could ever accuse Cadillac of building an aggressively styled car. And while this 1991 Eldorado “GT” likely isn’t really a performance car with its flaccid 4.9-liter V8, nor is it likely to carve up a road course like a CTS-V. However, the aftermarket modifications give this Eldo a pretty mean look with black-painted Pontiac wheels, a decklid spoiler, front splitter, body kit, and horizontal black striping on the headlights.

Actually, the more we look at it, the more we realize this looks like an Eldorado with the front and rear faschia from an Oldsmobile Trofeo with a Landau-style roof. The most curious line in the ad is “All customization sanctioned through Cadillac,” and one wonders which definition of “sanction” is being applied to this situation. Sure, it’s not running and needs a battery, alternator, and a catalytic converter, but how much is a customized front-wheel-drive Caddy worth? It might not be worth the $5,000 asking price, but it’s surely worth more than the $130 in scrap value of a normal Eldo.

I thought that this was a convertible as that vinyl roof is so badly fitted and wrinkly! That’s probably true of the rest of this monstrosity that makes a mockery of the Eldorado name as the original full size version is an icon of American culture This thing should be sacrificed on a huge pyre to pay for sullying such a great name!

I don’t believe there are any cars styled after 1980 that look right with a vinyl top… and absolutely none that look right with a sim-con top with the fake convertible bows. Lose the top and it would look better than a stock 1991 Eldorado, although that isn’t saying much.

That roof style was referred to as a “Carriage Top” and was supposed to look like a convertible. Some were factory options, but there were even some aftermarket companies doing other models. These tops were generally put on luxury models after convertibles went away. Buyers were usually older folks or guido’s trying to look rich. ;^)

If you were adventurous and have a wadded later Northstar to transplant: that car would be a good sleeper.

A few GM FWD hot rods exist. If you built a Buick 3.8 FWD engine, it takes to the Turbo just like a GN does.

As for Worth: Maybe $1,500. it’s a 1991 Cadillac Eldorado with less then 85,000 miles. Some parts replacement, unless it has major damage, it should be good all stock for another 100,000 miles.
