The Goodwood Festival Of Speed’s Timed Hillclimb Shootout Is One Of The Coolest Races In The World

The Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is held in England every year on a massive estate is one of the neatest automotive events in the world because it brings together racers and race cars of all genres and types as well as notable road going cars for a celebration of everything we hold near and dear at BangShift. Whether it is spectacular design, a race winning pedigree, or simply a freak of the racing world, you can find it being feted at Goodwood. We have showed you video of Richard Petty zipping his old 1967 hemi Plymouth stock car up the course which was nice but it wasn’t exactly spine tingling because The King was taking a more gingerly pace that he would have been if the ol’ Plymouth were entered into the actual racing portion of the event which is a times hillclimb shootout up a narrow and twisty mile and a half long course on Lord March’s estate. These guys were not effing around and with people like Max Papis and Sebastien Loeb competing, you knew it was going to be balls to the wall driving and competition…and then there were the cars.

In the old days this would have been called Formula Libre racing, which is the fancy French way of saying “run whatcha brung and hope you brung enough”. This video highlights that fact because you will see Formula One cars, an old Formula 5000 car, a NASCAR stock car, Loeb’s nutso rally/hillclimb car, and wild McLaren all gunning for the quickest time up the hill. We’re not going to give away the punch line and tell you who won but we will tell you that this looks like it was a VERY entertaining show and judging by how much of the course was used by all the drivers and how hard they were winding the cars up, no quarter was given. This was a race…not a parade lap!

A number of years back Nick Heidfeld in a full on 1999 F1 McLaren set the existing record at 0:41.6 This scared the event and they no longer allow the current crop of F1 cars to compete. The event has been dominated by purpose built Hill Climb cars for the past 10 years or so and no-one has come within a second of the current record. The fact they are running 44 second times with full bodied machines is amazing.
