BREAKING NEWS: Nissan GT-R Wreck Made It To A Spectator Area – One Dead, Several Injured

Reports from JalopnikCarThrottle and Autosport are reporting that one spectator has died and that four are injured after a Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 driven by Jann Mardenborough went over the catch fence and into a spectator area during the VLN Endurance race at the Nurburgring Nordschliefe today. The accident occurred at the Flugpatz corner.

Video taken by bystanders showed the GT-R lifting off of the ground and staying pretty much vertical before impacting a barrier, which sent the Nissan pinwheeling forward. The car managed to clear a catch fence and land inside of a spectator area. The race was red-flagged to give emergency crews access to the course, and has been officially cancelled. The deceased had been taken to the medical center at the track and was being treated by rescue crews. There is no official statement regarding Mardenborough’s condition, though pictures have shown him standing outside the car and the video showed him at least ambulatory.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased and the injured.

Maybe it’s just a zoom lens compacting things but that is pretty close to a tight corner to be going fast enough to fly. The flat underbody can’t be any help in keeping it on the ground.

It seems that there’s not much difference in this and the Mercedes accidents that took place at LeMans back in the early 90’s. Changes were made to the cars and to the track afterwards.

It’s a sad day to be sure on everyone involved.
