Germany’s ADAC GT Masters series is the only place in the world you’ll find a GT3-spec Corvette C7.R and with a championship seemingly sewn up in the final race of its debut season, this Callaway C7 GT3 suddenly had it all go horribly wrong. The Callaway car driven by Jules Gounon and Daniel Keilwitz had entered the weekend trailing the Audi R8 LMS of Christopher Mies and Conor de Phillippi by just two points. After a stronger first race, the Corvette had positioned itself after the second race’s mandatory driver change to bring home the title.

However, French driver Gounon got a good run on the Grasser Racing Lamborghini trying to pad the lead for some insurance points and he just nicked the Lambo. That sent Gounon spinning in the C7, which eventually broad-sided the wall right in front of a flag station. The flaggers were OK, but Gounon’s left leg broke in the massive impact. The shattered Corvette and the extraction needed to pull Gounon from the car red-flagged the race.

Mies and de Phillippi, a 23-year-old American rising star, ended up with the championship, though there’s little doubt that neither would have wanted to become champions in such a horrible wreck. Hopefully, Gounon recovers quickly and can pilot the Corvette again next year alongside his teammate Keilwitz, who won the 2013 GT Master championship. We love those beastly Callaway GT3s and hope for a speedy recovery for Jules Gounon.
