Goodguys Southwest Nationals Autocross Action Photos – Cones Fly and Champions Are Crowned At The Last Hurrah In 2014

(Photos by Jason Brady and Dan Ballard/RideTech) – If you have ever attended an “end of season” event of any kind you know that there is a certain feel to the whole thing that’s different than you get at other times of the yeah. People know that this may be their last big hit of adrenaline before the spring, or maybe it is their last chance to prove out the changes they have made to their car, or maybe they are competing for a title or a championship that will require their laser focus on the task at hand before a winter of relaxation. Whatever “it” is, the Goodguys Southwest Nationals had it in spades, especially on the autocross course where the best in the nation were all on hand to give it hell and take home the Goodguys championship for 2014. Bret Voelkel, Danny Popp, Brian Hobaugh, Mary Pozzi, and a cast of thousands gathered to throw the kitchen sink at a course that would ultimately challenge the best drivers in the country to the limits of their ability.

Thankfully for us, RideTech’s Jason Brady and Dan Ballard were on the scene and equipped with picture taking machines to document some of the cars and trucks that got after it in Scottsdale. You will see plenty of familiar faces in here as well as some new entries into the cool world of pro touring like the Violent Valiant and the Craftsman Comet. When it was all said and done, Brian Hobaugh took home the top honors, the check, and the title narrowly besting last year’s champ Danny Popp in an epic battle that saw the two see-sawing for top time over the course of the weekend. Our man Rodney Prouty was in the mix along with others we have slapped backs, laughed with, and cheered on over the course of 2014.

Like we always say when looking at photo collections like this, pay attention to who is there and what companies literally put their components where their mouths are. Engineering innovative parts is an important part of the process but actually putting the rubber to the road and testing them, proving them, and pushing them in environments like this are what it is all about and that’s why we love paying attention to who is doing it!

While I truly applaud the muscle car guys for learning how to turn, all those expensive parts and freaky modifications for “better” handling. But I’d love to know how many of these guys would have been spanked by a stock Mini Cooper with a real autocrosser driving it! ;^)

And dear God, what the heck was that rear valance skirt on the silver Gen 2 Camaro? Is that a spoiler for when he’s backing thru gates?
