More Xtremer: X-Games gold-winning skateboarder Bucky Lasek will try hand at rally (Killer Rally Video Inside!)

(By Eric Rood) – If you came of age 10-15 years ago, then you might already know Bucky Lasek to be an 11-time gold medal-winning skateboarder at the X Games. You may not know that Lasek (mostly) traded in his trucks-and-deck for a fire-breathing Global RallyCross Subaru in 2012 as part of Subaru’s factory-backed GRC effort. In two weeks, Lasek will drive a factory Subaru WRX STI in his first stage rally at Rally America’s Sno*Drift near Atlanta, Michigan.

Lasek will replace fellow Subaru driver David Higgins–who has taken home seven Rally America championships (including the last five)–at Sno*Drift with Higgins’ regular codriver Craig Drew in the right seat. Higgins will forego the round behind the wheel but will be in Michigan to coach Lasek in the Super Production class WRX.

It won’t be the first time Lasek and Higgins have worked together; Higgins has made several GRC appearances with Subaru since 2012, racing with and against Lasek on short, close circuits. However, Lasek will get his first taste of long stage rally with Drew’s experienced pacenote cadence directing him through the forest-road stages.

Higgins will return to the driver’s seat in February for Missouri’s Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, where he will attempt to continue his 14-rally win steak.

As the name suggests, Sno*Drift traverses 17 stages of snow- and ice-covered roads in northern Michigan. With limited competition at the sharp end of the field of racing, Lasek stands a good chance of outpacing the field for the 121 race miles over two days.

Here’s a short video of Higgins on the final stage, “Bonfire Alley,” taking home the 2015 Sno*Drift win. Rally fans know how to celebrate for the winners.
