This is some zen-like racing video right here. Firstly, we’re at the Nurburgring in 1973, secondly we’re riding shotgun in a screaming Formula One car and thirdly we have Jackie Stewart narrating the whole lap as the car goes ’round. It is important to note that Stewart is not the driver in this footage, that’s Howden Ganley in the seat working the shifter, pedals, and steering wheel. Stewart’s commentary is awesome because in typical fashion he mixes all of the great technical details about driving the car with some editorializing about safety (which he was a huge champion for and should be rightfully credited for advancing the cause when others would not speak up). There is a spot just after a minute into the film where he describes a section of the track where the g-force loading on the driver is so heavy that the driver cannot lift his foot off the brake to the gas until he slows down. Yikes!

While we’re entertained by the every present manufacturer “record run” videos that GM, Porsche, Nissan, and other companies pump out when they have a production car that is “fast” around the track, they all look like a lazy stroll when you see what’s going on in this video. We have no idea what 1973 era F1 cars topped out at but this guy has to be clipping along at close to 100 in certain sections of the course. Lots of it has guard walls on one side and rocks or trees on the other. Many, many drivers have started laps and not lived to see the end at the ‘Ring. Stewart himself gave the course the nickname, “The Green Hell”.
