Rough Start: Egging On The Thoughts Of A Third-Gen Pro Tourer With A 1990 Pontiac Firebird

Rough Start: Egging On The Thoughts Of A Third-Gen Pro Tourer With A 1990 Pontiac Firebird

So Chad has third-gen F-cars on the brain. Can’t blame him, after seeing all the fun that he and Daphne have been having the last couple of weeks. And I can’t help myself…I have to encourage that kind of behavior. If you haven’t seen the 1989 Camaro that he thinks will be a great beginner, check it out, but I stole his basic ideas (good paint, useable interior, overall decent shape on the cheap) and went digging using our Rough Start guideline of $5,000 purchase price off of Craigslist. Surely, it wouldn’t be too hard to turn up a decent F-car for that price, would it?

Of course not! Three minutes’ worth of searching turned up this 1990 Firebird sitting in the West Valley area of Phoenix for $4400. We found some pretty roached-out specimens of both Camaro and Firebird before this, but this black ‘Bird looks like the one. What makes us say that? Easy: NO T-Tops. This solid roof, TPI 350-powered Firebird is the perfect start for a G-machine build. Chad would probably LS-swap it first thing, and I can’t say I blame him any, but even if you made a 383 out of the TPI motor, you’ve got power. Chances are good that the WS6 suspension is under the car, so you have good bones to work with, and it might be a personal thing with me, but the Firebird looks sleeker than the IROC-body Camaro does. Maybe it’s the hidden headlights.

The interior is an eight out of ten, the paint is at least ten-footer good, and it’s in Phoenix…what rust? Swap out the seats, start putting in the good parts, and get ready to have some fun with this beauty!

It’s probably from watching too much Knight Rider, but I like third gen Firebirds too. Definitely needs a manual transmission, and switching that 350 TPI with a 4.8 LS out of a truck would improve both vehicles (seriously, who thought an engine that was happiest above 5000 RPM was a good idea for the default engine in a U-Haul box truck?). But waking up the 350 with more cam and an intake that can breathe at high revs wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

The prize for the worst-ever pop up headlamps in automotive history goes to the third-gen Pontiac Firebird!
