Target to exit Ganassi Racing sponsorship of IndyCar for 2017

Target to exit Ganassi Racing sponsorship of IndyCar for 2017

Chip Ganassi Racing has announced that their longtime sponsorship partner Target will leave the Verizon IndyCar Series for the 2017, AP writer Jenna Fryer reported Wednesday. Target will remain a sponsor for Ganassi’s NASCAR program, but that leaves the open-wheel team without the familiar red circles of the Target logo for the first time since 1990.

Ganassi driver Scott Dixon has worn the iconic red-and-white Target livery on his car and race suit since 2002 and the team are currently looking for new primary sponsorship for Dixon with 2017’s plans still including a four-car team as Ganassi run now in IndyCar.

Eddie Cheever debuted the Target livery as a rookie in 1990, finishing 7th place at Phoenix International Raceway for Ganassi’s one-car team. That was the beginning of a long string of successful drivers carrying the Target branding, which included Arie Luyendyk, Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser, Alex Zanardi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Briscoe, Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti, and Tony Kanaan.

The car wearing Target branding has racked up 11 open-wheel championships across the CART, Indy Racing League, and IndyCar Series along with four Indianapolis 500 victories.

Target will remain as the primary sponsor on the Ganassi-owned #42 car for Kyle Larson in the 2017 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

I remember meeting Jimmy Vasser in my local Target years ago and getting him to autograph a Wheaties box he was on the cover of. There was also a full size Lego IndyCar on display. Ah, the glory years. Just can’t imagine not calling it Target Chip Ganassi anymore.
