This 1960 Cadillac DeVille Convertible Is As Classy As It Is Cool

Both Chad and I love us some classic Cadillac action. The massive cars have a presence about them and for our money, the styling from the 1940s right into the era of the land barges of the 1970s was among the best the American auto industry had to offer. In some ways the testament to that is how hard it is to modify one of these cars to make them look “better” than they did when new. Part of that is their size and part of it is that guys like Bill Mitchell were steering the design ship and because this was the flagship brand of the company, had license to get a little outside the box. Nothing looks better than a huge Cadillac on air sitting about two inches lower than stock.

This car is a great one for a multitude of reasons starting with the fact that it is surgically clean top and bottom. The chassis is stock appearing as is the ride height, the door handles have been shaved off and frankly that’s about it. The stock wheel covers with wide white walls pin the car to the ground and while we’re not sure if the powder blue/cream top were a factory option, they sure bleed class and style on this car.

I have falling into the “large convertible” rabbit hole for the last few days and I’m not sure why that is. From Polaras to Pontiacs and now to this Cadillac, the idea of rolling down the street in a car this size with the top down and the family piled into it is appealing to me, more so than perhaps ever before. Maybe it’s the winter getting to me or maybe I’m getting old. Probably both.

This isn’t a hot rod by today’s standards but the 390ci Caddy engine likely sounds good and maybe we’d have a little fun there with a cam and some light hot rodding just to give this beautiful boat enough suds to leave a wake (and some tire smoke) behind it when we wanted.
