So Plymouth Used Dune Buggies and Sand To Sell The 1970 Plymouth Fury? This Ad Is Weird and Awesome

So Plymouth Used Dune Buggies and Sand To Sell The 1970 Plymouth Fury? This Ad Is Weird and Awesome

In what has to be one of the weirdest car ads we have ever seen, this 1970 Plymouth Fury commercial places the massive car on sand dunes with dune buggies! We’re guessing that the idea here is to illustrate how “light” the car is or something of that nature? Despite their massive width and length, these cars were not as heavy as you’d suspect weighing in around 3,600lbs but they certainly aren’t sand runners, or at least we did not think they were before this.

The old school dune buggies are pretty awesome, especially when you see them jumping and ripping through the sand. The Fury just kind of shows up here and while it never jumps or completely joins the party with the buggies it still proves that it is capable of cruising over the sand.

The car we see is the four door hard top model, one of our favorites here. For 1970 the S/23 and the VIP models were discontinued. The Fury was still a popular machine though with more than 200,000 sold and shipped out of the factory. While many of the ads and films from the 1970s are interesting and a little off center you can normally get their meaning pretty easily. This one? Not so much.

Exactly what scale are they using to think ANY C-Body weighs 3600LBS???

Years ago we put my dad’s cars on a truck scale at his work. His 77 Newport, 400, AT, 2 door with every piece of lint out of it weighed 4730 and his 71 Imp 440, AT, 4 door weighed 5105!!

The bumpers alone on that Imp weighed as much as a TF dragster.

Given the resources, I’d recreate that car in a heartbeat, with a Sport Fury GT interior. That car in that ad is the true forerunner of today’s 4dr Charger R/T.
I still need to have the money to build a triple black 4dr Dodge Monaco R/T in a hardtop.
