It’s pretty cliche to toss out the old “Momentum is a terrible thing to waste” cliche here, but damn if it isn’t appropriate. When you only have 100 horsepower in your Honda Fit to work with, you really need to use every inch of the racetrack and not lose even a tenth of a mile per hour just to get around the track. When you toss in more B-Spec cars, momentum maintenance becomes even more challenging, but let B-Spec teammates Darren Seltzer and Chi Ho show you how it’s done at the SCCA Majors Tour event at Sebring International Raceway last weekend.
Seltzer and Ho trade spots several times in the opening handful of laps and while nothing happens quickly, you can see how they set each other up to overtake by using different lines to improve exit speeds, taking the inside line to defend, taking the inside line to pass, drafting to pick up 1-2 mph on the straights to have a chance to outbrake, and even hanging at a corner’s apex just long enough to balk the other driver behind.
The video only shows the first half the race, which Ho won to make him undefeated in B-Spec at to two Majors events this year. Those wins already nearly qualify him for the SCCA Runoffs this year, which will be held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in late September.
As I always say “any idiot can drive a fast car slow, its way harder to drive the slow car fast” of course its very hard to drive a fast car fast, but that’s a different story.
