Watch Austin Dillon’s Incredible Wreck From The Coca Cola 400 – Walks Away, Engine and Trans Ripped Out

Watch Austin Dillon’s Incredible Wreck From The Coca Cola 400 – Walks Away, Engine and Trans Ripped Out

Austin Dillon walked away from one of the most horrific wrecks that has ever taken place at Daytona International Speedway last night. The crash came during the packed conclusion of the NASCAR Coca Cola 400 at the historic track. A huge chain reaction calamity, Dillon was but one of the racers gathered up and he got the worst of it. His car took flight directly into the catch fence and was literally torn to shreds. The engine, transmission, front suspension, and virtually every other system was forcibly removed from the chassis. Essentially all that remained was the safety cell that protects the driver in the event of an incident like this.

We could go on and on but the reality is that the video tells the whole story. The fact that Dillon walked away from this is mind blowing.

Guess NASCAR didn’t learn anything from pack racing and Dan Wheldons death. Dillon is lucky to be here today, and a few more inches of fencing gone and they would have had many casualties in the stands.

NASCAR learned much and applied it all to safety, racing is dangerous and in this one they all walked away. Pack racing is part of racing.

The only thing NASCAR has learned over the years is how to better separate a fool from his/her money having said fool smile while their pockets are being emptied all for the privilege of watching an ‘ event ‘ who’s conclusion was predetermined months before the ‘ event ‘ ever happened …

… and then hoping for the occasional moment of reality like this to come along keeping the minions in line and their money flowing out of their pockets

THAT .. is what NASCAR has learned . Hmmm … in light of your comment seems like what NASCAR has ‘ learned ‘ is working out pretty damn well ..

      .. for them that is …. 😉

It sure has worked out for the fans who saw a great race last night, who pissed in your Froot Loops?

Dan Weldon was in an Indy Car , but your point is well taken.

Had Dillon gone in top first this story may not be as good.

“Part of Racing” sounds good , but the family sitting in the stands is not wearing helmets and fire suits.

I love all forms of racing but I don’t think coming home dead is in the plan.
Yes I have read the back of the ticket.

With the next layer of cables and cable netting going in those lower level seats will be useless because you wont be able to see through them so the first 50 rows of seats will be removed .

Nobody died. My point is the people inside the fence accept the danger and are for the most part at least dressed for it. Even long time fans will say they “accept” that parts my come flying off cars , but nobody in the stands is dressed for flaming/hot parts coming at them at 200mph.

From all reports nobody , in the stands, got hurt too bad (this time).

Should NHRA put a bubble over the drgstrip to avoid the Antron Brown kind of wheel departure that happened in Phoenix? Cold cocked and killed a woman in the pits with her back to the action. Shit happens at motor racing.

This is exactly what the brainless individual in charge wants. Something to call overtime so that hundreds of thousands if not into the millions of dollars of damage can occur for the sake of The Show. It hasn’t been racing in a long time. A manipulated entertainment product for profit at the expense of others.

+1 … and the only one to hit the nail on the head . NASCAR is scripted from practice times to the ‘ big finish ‘ just like Pro Wrestling . And just like Pro Wrestling the only thing still giving it a semblance of reality is when as in this case ‘ reality ‘ occasionally intervenes into the scripted ‘ event … giving a modicum of credence to an otherwise preordained show

Which is to say … yer damn tootin this is what ole Brainless and Company wants . A bit of real drama to spice up the scripted bs keeping the minions watching hoping they can spot the rare moment of reality when it happens

BTW and FYI ; There is a whole slew of psychology and cultural papers and books currently out on this subject primarily focusing on Pro Wrestling because it is the oldest ‘ scripted ‘ .. ‘ sports ‘ … and I use the word ‘ sports ‘ loosely .. event .. but what goes for Pro Wrestling goes for NASCAR , F1 et al as well

      But then again there’s a book about this thats been around for decades ;

Aldous Huxley’s ” Brave New World ” … e.g. We’re being entertained into submission … the worst part being … we’re begging for it …. like lemmings to the slaughter

The funny part about this sad event was it happened @ 230AM EDT! I’m sure most of the country was asleep when this almost catastrophic accident occurred.

  6. Bret Kepner

It’s all fun and games until somebody throws in a mixed metaphor.

“…like lemmings to the slaughter”. Absolutely hilarious!

Yes it’s a very horrific crash.
Yes it’s great that Dillion walked away and no one else was hurt.
Yes, today’s NASCAR race car can withstand a crash like this and keep the driver safe and unharmed.
Yes the catch fence worked as it was designed – to have all the wreckage stay within the bounds of the race track.
Yes wrecking is part of NASCAR especially at the superspeedways.

And Yes, a whole lot of drivel and nonsense has been posted previous to this post.

    1. Lee

OK – a small revision . . . no one was seriously hurt. . . A spectator did need to be taken to the hospital but was in stable condition

  8. Tracy

It says a lot about “pack racing” and the expected wrecks when they are known as “The Big One’ and the announcers use that term like it scripted into the show.

    Oh, did I say “scripted”?

    WWF on wheels.

  9. keith

One very lucky person in the whole deal is the photographer who was up against the catch fence 30 or 40 feet before the impact zone. Had he been up track at the impact zone, well, not so good. One very lucky man.

  10. Truckin' Ted

I’m glad that Dillon was able to walk away from this one. But, history has proven that the tri-oval area seems to have more than it’s fair share of accidents. Geoff Bodine ended his career in a Truck race some years ago, Kyle Larson had much the same accident in Feb. 2014, and then this last night.

History has also proven that until someone gets seriously hurt or killed, NASCAR will do nothing. In as much as they talk about safety, it seems almost hilarious to me that the $400M redux of the grandstand was all the talk in Feb. Then perhaps on cue, Kyle Busch gets hurt in the Nationwide race with a broken leg and ankle………….then ‘Bring out the Clowns’ hit the turn-table ………and suddenly “we got to do something to improve all of the concrete walls at ALL the NASCAR tracks.”

You may call pack racing a part of life,…….but I dare you do have a serious conversation with the families of Kenny Irwin, Kyle Petty, John Nemechek, or Dale Earnhardt about a HANS device or something similar.

Anyone who thinks that cars racing at 200 MPH in a crowd could ever be made to be completely safe is an idiot. Accidents happen, they just try to minimize the injuries. NASCAR, despite its short comings, has done a lot for safety in the past 10 years and will continue to do so. If you want to watch something that is completely safe for all- change the channel. Because auto racing is never completely safe. If it were, it would be boring for both the driver and spectator.

BTW- glad to see Dillon walk away. That is a testimony to the safety in NASCAR.

So easy to say, yet very few do…………..”Scripted”, “Pro-wrestling”, “The Big Finish”, …really ! Hey Kid, why don’t you go to the next race stand on your pulpit and tell all the “acting” racers your thoughts. How about the dead-ones? I don’t know of any Pro-wrestlers that died from being hit in the head with a chair………….Like NASCAR or NHRA today or not, I don’t thnk those men and women behind the wheel are play acting.

Thank god Dillon walked away from it, or did he simply go “off script”……
