Amazing – Smokey Yunick’s 1978 Luv Truck Is For Sale On Craigslist – It Even Has Experimental Tires On it!

BangShift tipster BigDad gets all the credit on this incredible Craigslist find. What is it? How about the personal shop truck of Smokey Yunick! That’s right, the “Best Damned Garage In Town” proprietor cruised a 1978 Chevy LUV pickup that was specially modified for his dog Crankshaft to have a place to ride and sleep in comfort. Other than the interior changes we don’t know of anything else that was altered or changed on the truck. It does appear to have a push style bumper on the front which makes sense as Smokey probably used it to move broken cars around the yard at the shop.

The truck has an electrical issue that is keeping it from running properly now but it seems like it isn’t too big of a fix. One of the most amazing aspects of the truck are the front tires. They are experimental Goodyears that are clearly marked (according to the seller) with the words, “Not for sale” on them. We are wondering if they ever found themselves on a race car of some sort back in the day. The seller has the Florida title and all kinds of photos and stuff with Smokey in the truck along with the big dog. While owning a Yunick race car would be grand, this is way cooler in our opinion. The truck he cruised and worked every day? The truck he had fixed up for his dog? This is real deal stuff!

In case it sells, here’s the text of the ad. This is AMAZING –

This is Smokey Yunick’s personal shop truck. His wife said this is the only vehicle that she could remember that Smokey actually had titled in his name instead of the shop. It is a 1978 Chevy LUV truck. The odometer is showing only 28k miles and the truck appears to be a low mileage truck, as the interior is excellent and under the hood still looks great. The engine starts and runs but will shut right off like the key was turned off, appearing to have some type of electrical problem with the ignition. Being sold just as it is so do not buy the truck with the intention of driving it home! Truck has been sitting and now has a dead battery. Smokey removed the passenger seat and had the area upholstered so his dog ‘Crankshaft’ would have a place to sit. The pictures of the truck with Smokey and Crankshaft come with the truck along with a copy of the title showing the truck in Smokeys name. Notice the title shows it in ‘Smokey’ Yunick’s nickname. When have you ever seen a persons nickname on a title? I have also shown the prototype Goodyear racing tires on the front of the truck. They are marked ‘not for sale’. The truck also still has the last Florida license plate issued to the truck. The paint is still in good condition, but it is starting to show some age, but I would not paint it as this is the way it was when Smokey had it and it still looks good. My price is $6500.00 cash, firm. May consider an interesting trade.

I wonder if the motor has some tricky, hidden internal work done to it. Seems like the Smokey thing to do, and he couldn’t seem to leave anything alone.

I’d love to have this thing for putting around town. The thought of owning Smokey Yunick’s shop truck excites me now only if I had the money.

I dunno, man. Its not like there are any more things getting titled with Yunick Henry “Smokey” on them anymore. Good thing my wallets not fat.

The implement tires on that came off a tractor ? towmotor out at Daytona Airport. The electrical problem was, and will most likely be the voltage regulator, as Smokey never would let anyone put a delcotron on there. Henry Lentz tried several times to talk him into it. As far as the engine, I think you are right, and it is bone stock with tune. I don`t remember him doing anything else to it, as he was busy playing with those little ford square body cars (Fiesta).

And coincidentally, I have the factory repair manual for that truck in my library. Have the buyer contact me and I`ll send it. ( no signatures or anything, just one I kept around.
