Cheap Truck Challenge Video: Beater Trucks Go Head-To-Head Off Road For Fun

Every year, Fred Williams gathers up a group of his pals and challenges them to buy and modify a clapped out truck for the purposes of competing in a “competition” of sorts out in the rocks, muck, and mire. This year Williams showed up with a V6 S10 that he had modified, his pal Verne came in a cool International pickup, Fred’s pal Rob showed up with a well used Jeep Grand Cherokee which he had purchased from his dad, slammed some springs spacers in, busted out the sawzall for clearance purposes and jammed bigger tires into the enlarged wheel openings.

Williams has long been a champion of stuff like this because he uses it as an illustration to young guys who want to get into off-roading that they can have a truck to have fun with for short money. The trucks aren’t pretty but for their price point and the level of modification we’d say that they’re pretty damned capable (well, two out of the three are…one isn’t). For obvious reasons, we’re in love with the old International. The trucks is a middle 1970s model and you’ll see what Verne did to it in and effort to bring the truck back to life and kick some ass in this competition.

Interesting side note. Long about a decade ago when my college buddy David Kennedy moved from Massachusetts to California to work at 4-Wheel and Off-Road Magazine he lived with Verne in a house that they rented together. I actually lived on their couch for a week during spring break one year, rebuilt a transfer case in their driveway and laughed my tail of because Verne is a funny guy. Good times!
