Crazy Action Photos: 10th Annual Show and Go At The Lee County Mud Motorsports Complex

(Words and photos by David Whealon) – In most racing series winter warm-ups have started and Lee County Mud Motorsports Complex in Sanford, NC has followed the trend with their first race of the season on March 5th. With this being the kick start of the track’s 10th year anniversary and their annual “Show and Go” contest, the first race of the year brings out the most of the regular local competitors mixed with a few out of towners to serve as a test and tune to see if all their hard work in the off season will pay off through the grueling 9 month season.

Chad Sexton’s “Lacking Sanity” Chevy took the prize for the best looking piece on the property while most of the others showed up with the fresh paint polished to the max to take a stab at the extra prize money. Now that all the fanfare of the truck show was over it was time to get those shiny beasts covered up with some good ol’ red clay mud.

As always the muck was wet and thick and the action was as expected. Nothing but mud slingin’ fun. As always the day starts out with the guys a hard on the throttle trying to judge the way the trucks are going to react to the winter tune ups for slopping through freshly groomed pits. The smaller 200’ pit was a bit of a quagmire at the first hole for the stock “looking” trucks only to rut it out over the day to make some pretty awesome passes.

Unfortunately for track owner Darryl Jones and his Blown Ford Ranger “Scooby” maybe too much throttle was his reason for doing some Scooby tricks on his way out the 250’ Unlimited pit. Heading on to a possible record setting pass, his front right wheel went from attached to apart while flying at about the 200’ mark which caused the truck to land hard at the timing traps causing a crowd pleasing display of pirouetting barrel rolls. Darryl was okay but looks like the winter thrash will be starting all over him.

Although the attrition was high, the day turned out to be one of exciting mud racing madness. And judging by the action of this first race of the season the 2nd Annual “Fastest of the Fast” challenge slated for June 4th, is going to be one to go down as a can’t miss event for all you mud freaks out there.
