Crazy Cadillac: Believe It Or Not, This Cadillac Has Been A Freaky Truck Since New

Crazy Cadillac: Believe It Or Not, This Cadillac Has Been A Freaky Truck Since New

(By Greg Rourke) – There’s no shortage of incomplete projects for sale on the Internet. Guys get in over their heads, life happens and they run out of money, wife wants her car in the garage, we’ve seen it all. Here’s one that has lots of the hard work done, or not depending on which way you decide to go.

This is a 1949 Cadillac Series 62 that has been refitted by Brockway Trucks for use by an upstate New York fire department. I guess they wanted a little style in their hose hauler. A half open cab was added, a flatbed fitted, and a diamond plate step installed in back for when fire fighters used to hang off the back of the trucks. A heavier dual wheel rear axle was also added. I’m sure they had a reason why they used the Series 62 Caddy rather than the more common Series 75 commercial chassis often used for ambulance upfits and whatnot, but it’s lost to history.
The seller bought it as a bit of a rustbucket, but that’s been taken care of. His plans were to drop the body on a Pace Arrow motorhome chassis, but that plan was interrupted for whatever reasons. While we’ve seen plenty of trars on BANGshift over the years, this one just doesn’t seem to fit. The wheels don’t really fit the radius of the fenders, and the steer axle is just too wide. The seller may have agreed as he’s including the original chassis in the sale. If it was me, I’d source a C20 GM crew cab chassis, keep the modern-ish running gear and drop the body down to a close to stock ride height. My inner nerd would load up the flat bed with fire hose, stick a red bubble gum light on the roof, and spray the whole thing with the reddest red I could find.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

Lose the truck suspension and duallies, fit Ride Tech suspension and airbags then paint it gloss black and fit Dayton wires and whitewalls. Then install a sumptuous leather interior.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you the world’s most luxurious pickup!
