Dirt Every Day: Fred And His Buddies Revive A Barn Find 1972 Jeep Wagoneer And Road Trip It!

That latest episode of Dirt Every Day has hit the inter webs and that means fun with Fred Williams and his monthly adventures in the land of trucks. This time we’re in Washington State and the premise is pretty simple. Fred got alerted to a clean, cool, and just plain awesome 1972 Jeep Wagoneer that has 80,000 original miles on it and had been sitting for more than a decade in the same barn/garage. He decided he had to have it and in order to have it he decided that he needed to get some friends together and not only revive the Jeep but also take it on a scenic road trip to some of the best stuff that Washington State has to offer.

We like this episode because it is pretty laid back and fun. It is not too hardcore and it has the major element of storyline that we like which is “find old car/truck and then drive old car/truck”. It is the most fun gearhead experience you can have, trust us we’ve done it. There is no massive drama here but there are some really funny lines some goofing off and some questionable decision making that leads to an “unforeseen” delay in the trip.

When you look at the 1972 Wagoneer and see how simple, rugged, tough, and intact it is and then look at today’s crop of SUVs you’ll notice that while many things have changed many things have not. Yes, the transmissions have more gear ratios, the passengers have more doodads to touch and press and have break off in their hands, the fuel mileage may be better, but at the end of the day the same things are true. The basic shape is identical and the ability for these vehicles to eat up miles, take you to cool places, and allow you to do it in comfort is still intact.

Great video here, you’ll dig it!

Just watched this a couple nights ago. Fun episode. Great old Jeep I would not mind owning…even if the MPG’s hover in the 2 gallons per mile….

There may come a day when old Waggies are appreciated, I believe. Just yesterday I was peering through the front window of an in-transition car dealership, at a perfect-appearing late-’80s model someone was storing. At 2/3rds the size of a Suburban they should theoretically be able to get some good mileage, but not with no AMC V8 and TH400.

We’ll see if our own Chevy-six, NV3500-manual ’63 makes it to this summer’s hot-weather version of all the goofing-off (LeMons in Death Valley) but I am of the strong suspicion my partner in that-type endeavor is not going to be interested in dealing with it.

And we learned that Fred is useless in the snow. That was kind of funny and made me feel pretty smug. Thanks Fred.
