eBay Find: This 1971 International 1310 Truck Was As Hardcore A Pickup As You Could Get In ’71

eBay Find: This 1971 International 1310 Truck Was As Hardcore A Pickup As You Could Get In ’71

International pickup trucks were never known for their luxurious cabs, copious swaddling option packages, or opulent use or chrome and bright work. No, they were known as being virtually indestructible, unstoppable, and as long lasting as your pet rock. The company manufactured pickup trucks for decades and they got really good at it by the time they were done and this 1971 1310 International is a prime example of that lineage and the fact that sometimes work trucks are even cooler than the “special” models that were made during the same era.

The seller of this truck restored every inch of it and did a fine job, opting to keep the 392ci International V8 under the hood, the manual transmission under the floor boards, and the school bus yellow paint on the outside of this rig. We’re kind of shocked (in a good way) that this truck has 392 power under the hood. We figured that 392ci International gasser engine was a school bus and heavy truck only deal so it is pretty cool that the engine is in there. Immensely heavy and reliable until the end of time, it doesn’t make a ton of power but it’ll never stop making it.

How hardcore were these trucks built? This one came factory with the same 10,000l PTO Ramsey winch, front AND rear Dana 70 axles with 4.88 gears, and the bomb proof NP205 transfer case. Comfort and luxury were not part of the option package, getting into the woods seems to have been the primary concern. Hell, this thing is radio delete! You can see the block plate in the dash and from multiple angles we can see heater controls on the bottom right, negating any chance for the radio to be in the dash.

Trucks like this always get us wondering about their last job or where they were delivered to originally and for what purpose. What person spec’d out a winch, the biggest axles, motor, and ditched out on all the other stuff? That guy is our hero. A little more stark than today’s trucks, eh?

There was one of these at my local Pick-n-Pull; a ’72, same yellow, 2WD, short box. It was a long weekend away from being driveable: sheet metal was solid, wiring was loose in places but solid, engine was intact and not seized, carb still on the manifold, signs of a busted bearing on the front hub.
I couldn’t fathom why someone would just dump an awesome rig like that. Sure, you can throw away a Ford or Chevy pickup when you’re done with it, but a Binder is something special you run until it dies and rebuild. Not some appliance truck. A shame. I wish I’d bought it off the lot.

my daily driver service truck is a 1972 1310 dually 4×4 with the same winch and setup.
it has a servixe box on it.
it was a civil defense truck and just turned 30,000 miles on it.
had 14,000 when i got it.
its crude slow and loud. like a mastodon lumbering over the tundra
    love it.

Got a similar truck. No winch but 392 2bbl, an odd ih belled turbo400, divorced 205, 4.88 posi front and rear on dana70s. Only thing real diffrent was mine was a flatbed and it’s dually.
